CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Cam Newton threw for 253 yards with a touchdown and also scored on the ground Sunday in the Carolina Panthers' 35-27 win over New Orleans.

Newton went 14-of-20 through the air and compiled 71 rushing yards on 13 carries for the Panthers, who rebounded from a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in last week's season opener.

DeAngelo Williams added 69 yards on 14 rushes and Jonathan Stewart came back from an ankle injury to chip in with 51 yards on the ground.

Steve Smith led the Carolina receivers with three catches for 104 yards.

Jon Beason intercepted a Drew Brees pass with 23 seconds remaining to seal the Panthers' win.

Brees finished 31-of-49 for 325 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for New Orleans (0-2).
