MLB: New York Mets 2, Houston 1

NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Ike Davis pounded a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth -- his second long ball of the game -- allowing the New York Mets to edge Houston 2-1 Sunday.

Davis' first solo shot came in the fourth inning and handed the Mets a 1-0 lead.

The game stayed that way until the top of the ninth when Jose Altuve led off with a single against Mets starter Jeremy Hefner, stole second and came home when Mets outfielder Lucas Duda misplayed a Marwin Gonzalez fly ball into an RBI double.

But Duda later threw out Gonzalez at the plate when he tried to score on Ben Francisco's single, keeping the contest tied.

It paid off in the next half-inning when Davis lofted a pitch from Wilton Lopez (5-2) that just eluded leaping Astros right fielder Francisco and went over the fence for a game-winning homer.

Hefner limited the Astros to one run on five hits over eight full innings, issuing one walk while fanning seven as the Mets won just their second series since the all-star break.

Astros starter Lucas Harrell allowed a single run on just two hits over seven innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out seven.
