SNOQUALMIE, Wash., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Defending champion Mark Calcavecchia shot a 7-under 65 Friday that put him three shots in front after one round of the Boeing Classic.

Calcavecchia's first Champions Tour victory came at this event a year ago and he has since captured another title in Montreal.

He played the first eight holes of the TPC-Snoqualmie Ridge course in 5-under, and then birdied four out of six holes on the back nine. He suffered two bogeys, one of them coming on the par-5 18th hole.

Those tied for second at 68 included Steve Pate, Jay Don Blake, Jeff Sluman, Kirk Triplett and Eduardo Romero.

Willie Wood, coming off his first Champions Tour win at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, was among those who shot 69.
