CINCINNATI, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Jeremy Chardy surprised third-seeded Andy Murray Thursday to earn a quarterfinal berth at the Western & Southern Open.
Four-time champion and top-ranked Roger Federer advanced, along with current U.S. Open and Australian Open champ Novak Djokovic.
Chardy had met Murray four previous times and had lost on each occasion, but he rolled over the newly crowned Olympic champion 6-4, 6-4. Murray had won eight matches in a row.
After defeating the Olympic gold medalist, Chardy will now meet the bronze medal winner from the London Olympics -- Juan Martin del Potro.
Del Potro, who upset Djokovic in the third-place match at the London Games, moved into the quarterfinals Thursday by defeating Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-1.
Federer, who defeated Murray in the Wimbledon championship before losing to Murray in the gold medal match at the Olympics, took out Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-4.
Mardy Fish will be next up for Federer after getting past Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-3.
Djokovic, who won the Masters title last week in Toronto, advanced when Nikolay Davydenko retired with a shoulder injury. Djokovic had coasted to a 6-0 win in the first set before Davydenko withdrew.
Marin Cilic will face Djokovic in the quarterfinals following his 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over Pablo Andujar.
The other quarterfinal match will send Stanislas Wawrinka against Milos Raonic. Wawrinka defeated Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3 and Raonic ousted Tomas Berdych 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
