NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Television reality star Evelyn Lozada has filed for divorce from football player Chad Johnson following his arrest on domestic abuse charges, her lawyer says.

Attorney Michael Gilden told the New York Daily News Tuesday Lozada was seeking an end to the five-week-old marriage after the six-time Pro Bowl receiver was charged with injuring her during a Saturday altercation in Davie, Fla.

"Given recent events in my client's life, she has decided to file for divorce and move forward with her life," Gilden told the newspaper.

Johnson -- formerly known as Chad Ochocinco -- was arrested after Lozada complained to police he "head-butted" her during an argument, causing a deep laceration on her forehead.

The Miami Dolphins released Johnson Sunday and cable channel VH1 has dropped plans for a reality TV show starring Johnson and Lozada.

"I would like to apologize to everyone for the recent events that have occurred," Johnson said in a statement on his Web site Tuesday.

Lozada said in her statement, issued earlier in the day, she hoped Johnson "seeks the help he needs to overcome his troubles."
