FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The Miami Dolphins cut wide receiver Chad Johnson after he was released from jail Sunday following his weekend arrest on domestic violence charges.

The football star, arrested Saturday, was granted $2,500 bail Sunday after spending the night in the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the Miami Herald reported.

The newspaper said Johnson and his attorney had no comment as they left the jail and drove off in a black sports utility vehicle.

Coach Joe Philbin spoke with Johnson before he was dropped from the team, NBC Sports reported.

Johnson was arrested after his wife, reality TV star Evelyn Lozada, complained to police Johnson became upset during an argument in their car and "head-butted" her on the forehead, causing a laceration, a Davie, Fla., police report indicated.

The receiver was ordered to stay away from his wife, the Herald reported.
