LONDON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- U.S. cyclist Tyler Hamilton has been stripped of the gold medal he won at the 2004 Olympics due to the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

The International Olympic Committee said Hamilton sent a letter to the IOC admitting to the use of PED. He had earlier admitted publicly to the use of such drugs and returned his gold medal.

The IOC action Friday formally removed Hamilton's results from the 2004 Games. He had finished first in the men's individual time trial and was 18th in the men's road race.

As a result, Russian cyclist Viatcheslav Ekimov will be awarded the gold medal for the 2004 men's time trial with U.S. rider Bobby Julich now a silver medalist and Australian Michael Rogers moving from fourth to third and the bronze medal.

Hamilton admitted to using banned substances in May 2011. He appeared on the CBS television program "60 Minutes" and implicated seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong in PED use.
