Williams, Sharapova roll into Italian Open quarterfinals

LONDON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The United States won the Olympic gold medal Thursday in women's soccer.
Gaining revenge for a loss to Japan in last year's World Cup, the Americans held on for a 2-1 victory over the Japanese in the Olympic final.
The bronze medal went to Canada, which defeated France 1-0 earlier in the day in the third-place match.
It was the third consecutive Olympic title for the American women.
