Stotts named new Trail Blazers coach

PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Terry Stotts has been tapped as the new head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, General Manager Neil Olshey announced Tuesday.

Stotts replaces interim Coach Kaleb Canales, who took the Blazers' reins in March after the firing of Nate McMillan.

The 54-year-old has held NBA head coaching positions twice before, guiding Atlanta (2002-04) and Milwaukee (2005-07) to a combined 115-168 record.

He has spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks. He has spent a total of 18 years in the NBA coaching ranks.

"Terry is one of the elite offensive minds in the NBA, has extensive experience with multiple organizations and was instrumental in the Dallas Mavericks winning the 2011 NBA Championship," Olshey said.

"I'm very pleased to be a part of a great franchise in a beautiful city with such a proud history," Stotts added. "I look forward to working hard with Neil and our players toward the ultimate goal of bringing another championship to Portland."
