TRENTON, N.J., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- The NCAA and the four largest U.S. professional sports leagues filed a lawsuit to try to stop efforts toward legalizing gambling on sports in New Jersey.
Major League Baseball, the NBA, NFL and NHL joined the NCAA in a suit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Trenton, N.J.
New Jersey lawmakers passed, and Gov. Chris Christie in January signed, legislation that would allow betting on sporting events at New Jersey's casinos and racetracks. There are a total of 16 such venues.
The lawsuit from the sports organizations claims the new law violates the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 regarding betting on sporting events. The federal measure prohibits states from operating a lottery of betting scheme based on professional or college games.
Under the law, New Jersey could have initiated sports betting by Jan. 1, 1994, but the state refused to do so.
New Jersey officials have said they expected a legal challenge to their betting law.
