Olympic Medal: M 400

LONDON, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Kirani James of Grenada won the Olympic gold medal Monday in the men's 400-meter dash.

Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic took the silver and Lalonde Gordon of Trinadad and Tobago captured the bronze.

The victory by James gave Grenada its first Olympic medal in history. That country became the second to win its first Olympic medal during Monday's competition. A sailing medal won for Cyprus earlier in the day was that nation's first ever.

This marked only the second time in Olympic history that an American was not in the final of the 400-meter race. The only other time it had happened was in 1980, when the United States boycotted the Moscow Games.
