LONDON, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Andy Murray won a final on the grounds of Wimbledon but it was the Olympic gold medal rather than the Wimbledon Championships grand slam title he collected.
Murray improved to 9-8 lifetime against Roger Federer in Sunday's rematch of the Wimbledon Championships final. Federer took the title over Murray at the annual Wimbledon tournament in four sets a few weeks ago. But Sunday's Olympic tournament final was all Murray, as he won 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.
The loss denied Federer the Golden Slam and may be the big-event boost for Murray to put him in position to win a major tournament. He beat world No. 2 Novak Djokovic in the Olympic semifinals and then the top-ranked Federer on Sunday.
Juan Martin del Potro beat Djokovic in the bronze medal match and goes from ninth to No. 8 in the rankings. That pushes Janko Tipsarevic down one spot in the only change in the Top 10 this week.
Federer totals 11,435 points in the rankings with Djokovic next at 11,270. Rafael Nadal, who sat out the Olympics, is third while Murray is fourth with 8,120.
David Ferrer is fifth with 5,455 points and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sits in sixth at 5,230 and Tomas Berdych (4,515). Del Potro now has 3,340 points, 20 more than Tipsarevic. Juan Monaco is 10th and has 2,695 points.
Alexandr Dolgopolov won the ATP's Citi Open in Washington Sunday for his second career championship. Dolgopolov jumps nine places to 16th in the rankings.
