LONDON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The United States won the Olympic gold medal Saturday in the men's 400-meter medley relay, the final race in the career of swimmer Michael Phelps.

Matthew Grevers, Brendan Hansen, Phelps and Nathan Adrian made up the team that captured the last swimming gold medal awarded in the London Games.

Japan took the silver and Australia won the bronze.

Phelps finished his Olympic career with 18 gold medals, twice as many as any other athlete. He has 22 medals overall, breaking the previous record by four.
