Ilyin lifted 233 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a world mark and his total lift of 418 kilograms was also a record.

The silver went to Russian Alexandr Ivanov, who lifted 409 kilograms. Both Anatoli Ciricu of Moldova and Andrey Demanov of Russia lifted 407 kilograms, but Ciricu received the bronze medal because he does not weigh as much as the Russian.

Four of Kazakhstan's five gold medals have come in men's weightlifting. The other came from veteran cyclist Alexandr Vinokurov in the road race.
