U.S. nears group title in water polo

LONDON, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Four goals from Tony Azevedo sent the U.S. men's water polo team to a 13-7 Olympic win over Britain Thursday and to the verge of winning its group.

The Americans improved to 3-0 during the five-game, round robin portion of the tournament. Previously unbeaten Serbia was held to an 11-11 tie Thursday by Montenegro, a team the United States defeated 8-7 to open the Olympics.

Team USA will meet Serbia in a Group B match Saturday and a win for the Americans in that one will give them the No. 1 spot. That would allow them to play the fourth-place finisher from Group A in the quarterfinals.

Hungary, which defeated the United States in the gold medal match four years ago, won for the first time in these Olympics with a 17-15 decision over Romania. The United States and Hungary will meet in the final group game.

In Group A, Croatia remained unbeaten by downing Italy 11-6. Greece won its first game with an 11-4 triumph over Kazakhstan after suffering a loss and a tie to open the Games.
