AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Jim Furyk got off to a fast start Thursday with a 7-under 63 that gave him a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the World Golf Championships.

Furyk eagled the second hole at Firestone Country Club in Akron and then used his putting game to birdie five holes on the back nine and outdistance Lee Slattery, who finished at 5-under 65.

World No. 1 Luke Donald and Masters champ Bubba Watson were tied for third place at 66.

Tiger Woods also started out the day well. He was 3-under after 11 holes but stumbled in the stretch with three bogeys and finished back in the pack at even-par 70.
