DORNEY, England, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Helen Glover and Heather Stanning of Britain won the Olympic gold medal Wednesday in the women's pairs rowing event.
It was the first gold medal of the Games for Britain.
Australians Kate Hornsey and Sarah Tait won the silver and Juliette Haigh and Rebecca Scown of New Zealand took the bronze.
Americans Sara Hendershot and Sarah Zellenka were rowing in second place late in the race before fading in the final meters. They finished fourth, 0.2 second behind the New Zealand rowers.
