LONDON, July 30 (UPI) -- Wang Yihan and Wang Xin, both from China and seeded 1-2 in the Olympic women's badminton tournament, advanced into the main singles draw Monday.

Both the men's and women's tournament start with 16 groups, made up of two or three players. To reach the round of 16, a player must win his or her group.

Wang Yihan, the current world champion, defeated Michele Li to win her two-person group. Wang Xin needed only 27 minutes to roll past American Rena Wang.

Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, seeded No. 1 in the men's draw, also reached the round of 16 by defeating Ville Lang of Finland.

Wie lost in the 2008 Olympic finals to Lin Dan of China and Lin also advanced Monday.

There will be another round of group play Tuesday before the knockout phase of the tournament begins Wednesday.
