LONDON, July 30 (UPI) -- Matthew Grevers led a 1-2 American finish Monday and won the gold medal in the men's 100-meter backstroke.

Nick Thoman of the United States was the silver-medal winner. Ryosuke Irie of Japan was awarded the bronze.

An American swimmer has won this event in five consecutive Olympics.
