LONDON, July 29 (UPI) -- France won the Olympic gold medal Sunday in the men's 400-meter freestyle relay, coming behind in the final leg to edge the United States.

The Americans, with Michael Phelps swimming the second leg of the relay and giving his team a substantial lead, took the silver and Russia won the bronze.

The silver medal won by Phelps moves him within one of equaling the all-time Olympic medal total of 18.
