LONDON, July 29 (UPI) -- Dana Vollmer of the United States won the Olympic gold medal Sunday in the women's 100-meter butterfly.

She became the first woman to swim the distance in less than 56 seconds, thus setting a world record.

Lu Ying of China took the silver medal. Alicia Coutts of Australia won the bronze.
