SEATTLE, July 28 (UPI) -- John Jaso's three-run homer in the first inning set the tone Friday and the Seattle Mariners cruised to a 6-1 victory over Kansas City.

The Mariners catcher added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the next inning while Mike Carp went 2-for-4 with a solo shot as Seattle claimed the opener of a three-game series.

Blake Beavan (6-6) stymied the Royals on one run over 6 2/3 innings, yielding four hits while walking one and striking out six.

Kansas City's Jeremy Guthrie (0-2) was roughed up for 11 hits over 5 1/3 frames, allowing six runs.
