Langer in front at Senior British Open

TURNBERRY, Scotland, July 26 (UPI) -- Bernhard Langer fired a 6-under-par 64 Thursday in taking the lead after the first round of the Senior British Open Championship in Scotland.

Langer, who won the event in 2010, had three birdies on each side at Turnberry in Thursday's play. He has a one-stroke lead over Mark McNulty, who was also bogey-free in the first round.

Michael Allen, Joe Don Blake, David Frost, Lu Chien Soon and Dick Mast are tied for third at 4-under 66. None of those players managed to get around the course without a bogey.

Langer started strong with birdies at Nos. 2 and 3 and made the turn at 3-under after a birdie at 7.

He had back-to-back birdies at 11 and 12 before a birdie at 17 got him to 6-under.

McNulty opened with two birdies and matched Langer with birdies at 7 and 17. His other birdie came at the 10th hole.
