CLEVELAND, July 24 (UPI) -- Aaron Cunningham's suicide squeeze bunt in the seventh inning scored Lou Marson with a the go-ahead run Tuesday, enabling Cleveland to edge Detroit 3-2.

With the score tied 2-2 in the seventh, Travis Hafner belted a one-out triple off Tigers starter Doug Fister (4-7). Marson came in to run for him and broke for home when Cunningham laid down a bunt.

Fister fielded it and made diving toss to catcher Alex Avila, but the ball bounced off Marson as he slid in with the decisive run.

Carlos Santana went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and Johnny Damon knocked in a run for the Indians, who took the opener of a three-game series and pulled to within three games of American League Central-leading Detroit.

Tribe starter Ubaldo Jimenez tossed six shutout innings but the win went to Joe Smith (6-2), who allowed a game-tying, two-run homer to Miguel Cabrera.

Vinnie Pestano hurled a scoreless eighth and Chris Perez notched his 28th save for Cleveland.
