VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 22 (UPI) -- Barry Robson's penalty-kick goal in the 61st minute Sunday provided the difference in the Vancouver Whitecaps' 2-1 victory over San Jose.

With the score tied 1-1, Robson was brought down on a slide-tackle by the Earthquakes' Sam Cronin and the Scottish midfielder followed by blasting a left-footed shot past Jon Busch and into the San Jose net.

Dan Richards contributed a first-half goal for Vancouver (9-6-7).

Alan Gordon scored for the Western Conference-leading Earthquakes (13-5-4).
