COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 22 (UPI) -- Chris Birchall scored in the 46th minute Saturday and the Columbus Crew went on to a 1-0 decision over D.C. United.

Birchall made a run down the left side after receiving a pass from Jairo Arrieta and fired a low left-footed strike into the net from 10 yards out for the game's only score.

Columbus (7-7-4) won for only the second time in five games.

United (10-7-3) just missed the equalizer in the 88th minute when D.C. defender Chris Korb hit the left post.
