MLB: Toronto 6, Boston 1

BOSTON, July 20 (UPI) -- Aaron Laffey threw seven shutout innings Friday and the Toronto Blue Jays snapped a three-game losing streak, downing Boston 6-1.

The Blue Jays cooled off the Boston bats after the Red Sox had won four out of five. Boston had averaged six runs a game in its previous five outings.

Laffey (2-1) made only his fifth start of the season and gave up eight hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Darren Oliver worked the eighth and Casey Janssen gave up the only Boston run in the ninth.

Toronto opened the scoring when a fielder's choice grounder by Edwin Encarnacion drove in Colby Rasmus. Encarnacion came in later in the inning on a single by J.P. Arencibia.

Rasmus delivered a two-run double in the second to build on the Toronto lead.
