OAKLAND, Calif., July 20 (UPI) -- Yoenis Cespedes and Seth Smith drove in two runs each to stake Oakland to an early lead Thursday and the A's then fought off the New York Yankees 4-3.
Cespedes hit a two-run homer in the first off starter Freddy Garcia (4-3) and Smith singled home two runs in the third.
A.J. Griffin (2-0) gave up two runs on seven hits and did not walk a batter over six innings in his fifth career start.
Sean Doolittle and Grant Balfour each worked a perfect inning of relief for the A's before Ryan Cook came on in the ninth.
Oakland had a two-run lead going into that inning, but Cook gave up a one-out, solo homer to Nick Swisher.
Raul Ibanez then struck out on a 3-2 pitch and Russell Martin grounded out to end the game. Cook collected his 10th save.
