CHICAGO, July 20 (UPI) -- NFL officials said Chicago Bears defensive tackle Nate Collins was suspended without pay for violating the league's substance abuse policies.

The NFL said Collins will sit out the first game of the 2012 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substance Abuse and he will be fined an additional game check, ESPN reported Friday.

Details of the violation were not disclosed.

Collins signed with the Bears in May after two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
