DETROIT, July 19 (UPI) -- Detroit starter Max Scherzer struck out nine and gave up just three hits Thursday in the Detroit Tigers' 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

One of the hits Scherzer (9-5) allowed was a home run by Mike Trout to open the sixth inning after the Tigers were already up 5-0. He walked four.

Detroit relievers Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde retired the six batters they faced.

Doubles by Prince Fielder and Jhonny Peralta and a two-run home run from Alex Avila gave Detroit a 3-0 lead in the second. Danny Worth added an RBI double in the fourth and Miguel Cabrera hit his 21st home run of the season in the fifth for the Tigers.

All the Detroit runs came off Jerome Williams (6-7), who gave up nine hits and walked one over six innings.
