BASTAD, Sweden, July 18 (UPI) -- Polona Hercog ousted second-seeded Julia Goerges in Wednesday's second-round play of the Sony Swedish Open in Bastad.

Hercog came away a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 winner over Goerges behind a solid serving game. She won nearly two-thirds of the points on serve. She also took almost half (39-40) of the points when Goerges served, piling up five breaks.

The tournament also lost its No. 1 seed when Sara Errani withdrew due to a shoulder injury. Errani was coming off a win Sunday at the Italizcom Open.

She was replaced in the draw by Jill Craybas but her stay was short-lived as she fell to Mathilde Johansson 6-4, 6-1 in a first-round match.

The final first-round match saw local favorite Johanna Larsson advance when, after Larsson went up 7-6 (8-6), 4-3, Olga Govortsova retired.

In second-round matches, No. 5-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova stopped Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-4, 6-0, losing only nine points in the second set; seventh-seeded Mona Barthel defeated Kateryna Bondarenko; and Tsvetana Pironkova advanced over Lesia Tsurenko 7-5, 6-3.
