BOSTON, July 18 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox announced Wednesday designated hitter David Ortiz had been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right Achilles tendon.

The injury occurred Monday during Boston's 5-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. Ortiz strained the tendon while stepping on second base as he headed home on a three-run blast by Adrian Gonzalez.

Ortiz, 36, is batting .316 with 23 home runs and 58 RBI in 89 games.

His place on the roster was taken by first baseman Mauro Gomez, who was called up from Class AAA Pawtucket. Gomez was in the Boston lineup as designated hitter Wednesday when the Red Sox faced Chicago.
