Paire has early upset in Gstaad

GSTAAD, Switzerland, July 16 (UPI) -- Benoit Paire eliminated eighth-seeded Bernard Tomic in Monday's opening day play of the Swiss Open tennis tournament.

Paire came away a 6-0, 6-4 winner in 1 hour of play. He controlled the first set by winning nearly 70 percent of the points overall. Paire finished with five breaks and won 54 percent of the points off Tomic's serve.

Jan Hernych claimed a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Matteo Viola in the day's only match that went three sets. Hernych had five breaks, with two coming in the final set.

Also Monday, Martin Fischer defeated Sandro Ehrat 6-2, 6-4 and Paul-Henri Mathieu got by Igor Andreev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

World No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic is the top seed for the tournament. He received a first-round bye and will go against Fischer in the second round. Defending champion Marcel Granollers is the No. 2 seed.
