SAN JOSE, Calif., July 15 (UPI) -- MLS-leading scorer Chris Wondolowski fired in the three goals Saturday, sparking the San Jose Earthquakes to a 5-0 rout of Real Salt Lake.

Wondolowski scored his 15th, 16th and 17th goals of the season for the Earthquakes (12-4-4), who improved upon the league's best record with the victory.

The American striker scored in the 18th, 72nd and 80th minutes as he picked up steam in his quest to break Roy Lassiter's MLS single-season scoring record of 27 goals, set in 1996 with the Tampa Bay Mutiny.

Alan Gordon and Simon Dawkins also scored for the Western Conference-leading 'Quakes.

Real Salt Lake fell to 11-7-3.
