In other second-round action, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez ousted fourth-seeded fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Andujar was last year's Stuttgart runner-up to former world No. 1 compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero.

German wild card Dustin Brown served up 19 aces in dispatching Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-1. Brown and Garcia-Lopez will meet in the round of eight.
