DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, July 11 (UPI) -- Diego Maradona has been fired after only one season as coach of the United Arab Emirates soccer club al-Wasl, officials said.

The UAE club finished eighth in the domestic league and did not win a second-tier competition, BikyaMasr.com reported.

Last month, the club had said Maradona, who had a two-year contract, would be retained despite a loss in the GCC Champions League final that forced the entire board of directors to resign.

In mid-June, club Chairman Mohammad Ahmad bin Fahad called reports Maradona had resigned a "mistake."

Maradona was fired Tuesday.
