Kukushkin falls, Volandri wins in Sweden

BASTAD, Sweden, July 10 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Mikhail Kukushkin was bounced in an upset, while No. 7 seed Filippo Volandri advanced Tuesday on Day 2 of the Swedish Open.

Kazakhstan's Kukushkin was eliminated by Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who notched a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 triumph at Bastad Tennis Stadium.

Italy's Volandri, meanwhile, knocked out the final Swede in the draw, wild card Michael Ryderstedt, in 6-4, 6-2 fashion.

Also collecting wins Tuesday were Italian qualifier Alessandro Giannessi, Czech qualifier Ivo Minar, Brazil's Joao Souza, Russian qualifier Evgeny Korolev and Portugal's Frederico Gil.

Spanish stars David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro are the top seeds at the event.
