OAKLAND, Calif., July 4 (UPI) -- A.J. Griffin yielded one earned run over six innings Wednesday and Oakland's bullpen stymied Boston in the Athletics' series-sweeping 3-2 victory.
Griffin, making his third major league start, controlled the Red Sox on two runs (one earned), issuing only three hits and a pair of walks while fanning three.
The victory went to Grant Balfour (2-2), who hurled 1 2/3 scoreless frames after the A's broke a 1-1 tie on Jemile Weeks' seventh-inning single.
Ryan Cook picked up his eighth save with a 1-2-3 ninth for Oakland, which held Boston to five runs over its three-game sweep.
Brandon Moss went 3-for-4 with a solo homer as the A's won their fourth straight overall.
Aaron Cook (2-2) absorbed the loss for the Red Sox, giving up three runs on nine hits over six frames.
David Ortiz cracked a solo homer for Boston.
