Brodeur to stay with Devils

NEWARK, N.J., July 2 (UPI) -- New Jersey's longtime star goalie Martin Brodeur, after testing the free-agent market, said Monday he will remain with the Devils.

The 40-year-old Brodeur agreed to a two-year contract.

Brodeur had handled his own contract negotiations for many years but recently hired an agent and received offers from other teams. He said some were willing to offer him a two-year contract.

"We did entertain some offers, but at the end the Devils were able to come through with [a second year] and that for me was the most important thing in the deal," Brodeur said.

"The Devils weren't ready for a little while to do that and when they were able to get it done that was a pretty easy decision to be made."

He didn't give details of the contract. The (Newark) Star-Ledger said it was worth $9 million.

Brodeur played for the Devils during the recent Stanley Cup finals, which they lost in six games to the Los Angeles Kings.

The veteran had a 31-21-4 record and a 2.41 goal-against average in 59 games during the 2011-12 regular season. He has a record of 656-371-141, with 119 shutouts and a 2.23 goals-against average, in 1,191 games in the National Hockey League.

His many honors in the NHL include four Vezina Trophies as the league's top goaltender.
