WASHINGTON, June 30 (UPI) -- Chris Pontius tallied in the 46th minute to break a scoreless deadlock Saturday and D.C. United went on to handle Montreal 3-0.

Pontius capped a long rush on goal with left-footed shot that found the mark inside the back post for his ninth goal of the season just before the half.

Eastern Conference-leading United (10-5-3) then put the contest away with second-half markers from Robbie Russell and Hamdi Salihi, improving to 7-1-2 at home.

The Impact (5-10-3) managed only one shot on goal in the contest.
