BCS presidents approve 4-team playoff

WASHINGTON, June 26 (UPI) -- College football will get its own version of a "Final Four" under a new post-season system approved Tuesday by the BCS presidential oversight committee.

The school presidents said they have given thumbs-up to a four-team playoff to determine a champion in the Football Bowl Subdivision, becoming effective in 2014 and running through 2026.

Virginia Tech University President Charles Steger, chairman of the oversight committee, said under the new system four teams will be chosen by a selection committee, with semifinals to be held at current bowl sites on a rotating basis.

A national championship game would then be played at the bowl with the highest bid.

"A four-team playoff doesn't go too far, it goes just the right amount," Steger said. "We are very pleased with this arrangement even though some issues remain to be finalized."

The new setup would replace the current formula in which percentage totals from the Harris Interactive poll, USA Today poll and computer rankings were used to determine the top two teams, who then played for the title.

Anthony Davis trademarks his 'unibrow'

NEWARK, N.J., June 26 (UPI) -- Ex-University of Kentucky star and expected top NBA draft pick Anthony Davis said Tuesday he has trademarked unique "unibrow."

Davis told CNBC he moved to protect the marketing rights to his brow -- which stretches unbroken over both of his eyes.

"I don't want anyone to try to grow a unibrow because of me and then try to make money off of it," Davis said. "Me and my family decided to trademark it because it's very unique."

Davis led the Wildcats to a national championship last season as a freshman and then declared for Thursday's NBA Draft in Newark, N.J., in which he is expected to be chosen No. 1 overall.

During the season, plenty of "brow" merchandise was sold in around Lexington, but the player didn't capitalize on it due to NCAA eligibility rules.

He has since signed with sport agent Arn Tellem of Wasserman Media Group to represent him, the broadcaster said.

BOSTON, June 26 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz, currently on the 15-day disabled list, has esophagitis, the team said Tuesday.

Buchholz was taken out of the Red Sox starting rotation last weekend after falling ill with what was initially diagnosed as a gastrointestinal disorder.

After being placed on the DL Sunday, he was evaluated at Massachusetts General Hospital where it was determined the hurler had esophagitis, characterized as "an erosion of the esophagus and an associated gastrointestinal bleed."

Buchholz is expected to make a full recovery, the Red Sox said.

The 27-year-old right-hander has had an up-and-down season with Boston, starting poorly but then improving, going 5-1 with a 3.35 ERA in his last eight starts.
