Cardinals linebacker Haggans in prison

GREENSBURG, Pa., June 21 (UPI) -- Arizona Cardinals linebacker Clark Haggans Thursday served the final day of a 48-hour sentence for drunken driving in a Pennsylvania jail, authorities said.

Haggans, a former Pittsburgh Steeler, surrendered at Westmoreland County Prison Wednesday. He pleaded guilty April 21, 2011, to extreme driving under the influence in Chandler, Ariz., but worked out a deal to serve his time in Pennsylvania, The Arizona Republic and Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

He also was sentenced to pay a $702 fine and serve seven days work release.

Haggans was driving home from a concert after receiving a call saying his 5-year-old daughter was having trouble breathing. Haggans originally was charged with extreme DUI, DUI, speeding and red light violations, but the lesser charges were dismissed.

"I was at a concert with my wife when I got a call from our babysitter that our 5-year-old daughter was having trouble breathing," Haggans said in a statement reads. "She has been on medicine and inhalers since she was born because of her underdeveloped lungs. The sitter was panicked. I had been drinking and my wife was planning on driving home from the concert. But my wife was wandering around when I got the call, and I couldn't find her. I tried calling her within the concert, but had no luck getting a hold of her. I needed to get home to my daughter immediately."

The NFL declined to comment on the case and has not indicated any punishment against Haggans.
