DENVER, June 20 (UPI) -- Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will undergo groin surgery after being diagnosed with a sports hernia, the team said Wednesday.

Tulowitzki's specific condition was identified as hockey goalie-baseball pitcher syndrome, which involves tears in the adductor muscles of the thigh.

The Rockies said surgery was set for Thursday in Philadelphia, with no timetable for a return.

A strained left groin muscle had put the infielder on the disabled list since May 31.

Tulowitzki was hitting .287 with eight home runs and 27 RBI when he went on the DL.
