BIRMINGHAM, England, June 16 (UPI) -- Russia's Ekaterina Makarova moved on and Jie Zheng of China also advanced before rain again shortened play Saturday at the Aegon Classic in England.
Makarova rallied past 13th-seeded Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 after dropping the first set, advancing to the semifinals at Edgbaston Priory Club.
Jie, meanwhile, completed a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory over fourth-seeded Roberta Vinci. She was trailing the Italian 3-6, 6-5 when their match was suspended for the day Friday.
Wet weather disrupted play for a second consecutive day, pushing back the final two quarterfinal matches at the grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.
In those contests, Serbia's Jelena Jankovic is leading Misaki Doi of Japan 2-0, while American Mel Oudin holds a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 edge against compatriot Irina Falconi.
