MLB: Detroit 5, Chicago Cubs 3

CHICAGO, June 14 (UPI) -- Austin Jackson broke a tie with a single and added insurance with a two-run home run Thursday in the Detroit Tigers' 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Jackson went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three runs batted in to support Justin Verlander (6-4).

Verlander allowed just five hits and struck out eight in eight innings. Three of the hits, including a two-run double by Darwin Barney, came in the second inning.

Barney's hit made the score 2-2 and it stayed tied until the seventh when Ryan Raburn led off with a single and, after an out, was sacrificed to second by Verlander. Jackson singled to left, allowing Raburn to score easily and hand the loss to Travis Wood (0-3).

Don Kelly tripled with one out in the ninth and Jackson followed two pitches later with a drive into the seats beyond left field for his seventh home run of the year.
