Dodig edged past Tsonga 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) without recording a break. Tsonga had a pair of second-set breaks but fell in both tiebreakers.

Both players won 113 points in the match and at least 70 percent of the points on serve. Dodig, just 11-16 on the year, saved three break points in the third set and claimed the match in the tiebreaker.

No. 9-seeded Kevin Anderson defeated fifth-seeded Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (12-10), 7-6 (9-7) in another close match. Anderson and Lopez combined for 29 aces and each player had a first-set break in their only break-point opportunity Thursday.

Sam Querrey, who had 15 aces, advanced with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 upset of eight-seeded Julien Benneteau in another match where the serve ruled. There were three breaks -- one in each set.
