MLB: New York Mets 6, St. Louis 1

NEW YORK, June 4 (UPI) -- Jonathon Niese struck out 10 over six shutout innings Sunday and the New York Mets grabbed a share of first place with a 6-1 win over St. Louis.

Niese (4-2) yielded six hits and issued one walk during the performance, during which he stranded three Cardinals runners at third base while another was thrown out at home.

The left-hander tossed 70 of his 96 pitches for strikes for the Mets, who took their third straight against St. Louis and pulled into a three-way tie atop the National League East with Miami and Washington.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI, while Andres Torres added three hits, including a two-run triple, as New York won for the seventh time in nine games overall.

Cards starter Jake Westbrook (4-5) was roughed up for five runs on nine hits in a five-inning start.

Adron Chambers went 2-for-4 with an RBI for St. Louis, which dropped a fifth straight overall.
