WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, June 1 (UPI) -- Mike Goodes, whose lone Champions Tour win came three years ago, shot a 7-under 64 Friday to take the lead after one round of the Principal Charity Classic.

Goodes opened his round with four straight birdies at the Glen Oaks Country Club.

"I hit the ball really well," Goodes said. "The golf course is in perfect condition. The greens are soft. You will see a lot of low scores."

He had a two-shot advantage over Larry Nelson, Larry Mize, Jay Haas, Tom Pernice Jr. and David Frost.

The group at 67, tied for seventh place, included Mark Brooks, Gary Koch, Jim Gallagher Jr., Dan Forsman, Russ Cochran, Eduardo Romero, Peter Senior and Kirk Triplett.

Defending champion Bob Gilder shot a 70.

Goodes has finished third on two occasions this year but is coming off a missed cut at last week's PGA Seniors Championship.
