CLEVELAND, May 30 (UPI) -- Cleveland designated hitter Travis Hafner will have surgery on his right knee and will miss more than a month of the schedule, Indians officials said.

Hafner has been diagnosed with a damaged meniscus in his right knee and is to have surgery Thursday, the team said. He is expected to be out 4-6 weeks and was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 24.

Hafner, 34, has spent 10 of his 11 major-league seasons with Cleveland. He is hitting .242 with six home runs and 23 runs batted in this season. He's a career .279 hitter with 195 home runs.

The Indians called up pitcher Scott Barnes from Triple-A Columbus to take Hafner's spot on the roster. This is the first time Barnes, 24, will be on a major-league roster. He's 0-2 with a 3.81 earned run average in 11 appearances with Columbus this year.
