Franchitti wins third Indianapolis 500
INDIANAPOLIS, May 27 (UPI) -- Dario Franchitti charged back from a pit road mishap Sunday, grabbing the lead with two laps left and hanging on to win his third Indianapolis 500.
Franchitti was spun around in his pit stall after a bump by E.J. Viso, sustaining a damaged front nose. The three-time defending IZOD IndyCar Series champion thus was forced to work his way back from 28th in the field.
The Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver parried with teammate Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan and Takuma Sato for the lead before moving in front with less than two laps remaining, then held off Sato on the final lap and bested Dixon by 0.03 seconds at the finish line.
Kanaan finished third, Oriol Servia was fourth and pole sitter Ryan Briscoe rounded out the Top 5.
Points leader Will Power ended in 28th place after crashing with Mike Conway midway through the race.
Defending champion Dan Wheldon, who died in an Oct. 16 multi-car crash at Las Vegas, was honored before the race when car owner Bryan Herta drove his vehicle one lap around the 2.5-mile oval.
Lions' Fairley arrested again in Alabama
MOBILE, Ala., May 27 (UPI) -- Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley has been charged with driving under the influence after a weekend arrest in Mobile, Ala., police say.
Alabama State Police indicated Fairley was charged early Sunday with DUI and attempting to elude police, as well as ticketed for reckless driving, no proof of insurance and having an open container, WALA-TV, Mobile, reported.
Jail records indicated Fairley was released shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday after posting $1,750 bond.
It was the second run-in with the law in less than two months for the former Mobile high school and Auburn University football star. He was also arrested April 3 for marijuana possession.
"We are aware of the reports and are in the process of gathering more information," the Lions told The Detroit Free Press in a statement.
It was the latest in a series of arrests involving Lions players during the off-season -- running back Mikel Leshoure and offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath have each been hit by marijuana charges.
Orioles give Jones six-year extension
BALTIMORE, May 27 (UPI) -- Outfielder Adam Jones landed the richest contract in Baltimore Orioles history Sunday when the club announced a new six-year contract extension.
The O's didn't reveal the terms of the deal, but the Baltimore Sun reported it was for $88.5 million, which would eclipse the $72 million, six-year deal given to shortstop Miguel Tejada prior to the 2004 season.
Added performance incentives could bring the total to $91.5 million, the newspaper said.
The contract will keep Jones, a seven-year veteran, with the Orioles through the 2018 season. He had been working on a one-year contract this season after avoiding arbitration.
Jones last year set career highs in games (151), doubles (26), home runs (25) and runs batted in (83), and is batting .309 with 14 homers over 47 games so far this season for the American League East-leading Orioles.
Red Bull's Webber wins Monaco GP
MONTE CARLO, Monaco, May 27 (UPI) -- Mark Webber claimed the Grand Prix of Monaco Sunday, becoming the sixth driver to win a Formula One race to begin the season.
Webber of Red Bull Renault finished first at the 78-lap Formula One race at the historic Grand Prix of Monaco circuit.
It was his second win in Monaco and the eighth of his F1 career.
Two-time world champion Sebastian Vettel led until pitting on lap 47, when Webber took over the top spot and held a 1.2-second lead on Mercedes AMG's Nico Rosberg during a light rain on the tight course.
Roberg finished in second place while Fernando Alonso of Ferrari came in third.
Claiming fourth was Vettel, while Lewis Hamilton completed the Top 5.
